Hikers were being evacuated from the Otter Trail on Wednesday as bitterly cold and stormy weather swept the Southern Cape coast, the Garden Route National Park said.

THE Garden Route is set to escape the aftermath of the first winter storm expected to bring a deluge to Cape Town this weekend.

HEAVY rain continued to lash the Southern and Western Cape yesterday with almost 200 people evacuated from their homes in Eden district and the neighbouring regions of Cape Winelands and Overberg even harder hit.

Hundreds of people have taken shelter in community halls and groups of matriculants have scrambled to get to their exams as the black south-easter closed roads and wreaked havoc through the Western Cape.
