Meet Plett’s awesome karate kids

THE Africa Goju Ryu Karate Federation tournament was held in Kuilsriver, Cape Town, last month, and two students from the Plett Goju Ryu Karate Club came home with well-deserved medals.

Six-year-old Mia Shaked – who won gold in Kata Gekki Sadai Ichi – started training at the age of four and immediately showed a natural talent and dedication to karate. She achieved her yellow belt at five, earlier than most children, and went on to win her first gold medal during the S-Cape Goju Ryu Championships in June.

This qualified her to enter the Africa champs and she once again excelled by bringing home a gold medal for Plett. Says the club’s Karen Gouws: “We look forward to many more achievements from this exceptional young karateka.”
Bryce Butterworth, 9, won a bronze medal in Kata Saipha.

“Bryce began his karate training aged six and has steadily progressed through his grades to green belt+1 stripe.

“He has been extremely dedicated and has attained several gold, silver and bronze medals at the annual Southern Cape Goju Ryu Championships,” explains Karen.

“This year he also qualified for the Africa Goju Champs and did us proud by winning a bronze medal. Well done, Bryce!”
